About Arroyo Grande
Arroyo Grande is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California with a reported population of 17,716 in the 2013 census.
The earliest inhabitants of the Arroyo Grande valley, and most of the Central Coast, were the Chumash. Many areas in the Central Coast are still considered sacred to the Chumash. The first Europeans to arrive from the Pacific Ocean were the expedition of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, exploring the coast in 1542. Cabrillo was followed around 200 years later by the Portola land expedition in 1769. The establishment of missions along the Portola trail brought European influenced agriculture to the area.
In 1862, the San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors established the township of Arroyo Grande. The main road was named Branch Street in recognition of Francis Ziba Baranch, who established a Mexican land grant in 1836 through his marriage to Maria Manuela Carlon. A railroad depot was built in 1882. The city of Arroyo Grande was incorporated in July 1911.
